I have been creating art for my whole life. By the time I was 13, I was already dabbling in fashion design, miniatures and models as well as a few commercial illustrations. My medium then grew into paintings on canvas. This quickly shifted to a more mature and serious style of work for me, leading up to my first one-man show at the age of 20.
Highly encouraged by the positive response and my desire to paint very large, I pursued Fine Art while mastering in Set Design at the University of Waterloo. My eventual dismay at the impermanence of Theatrical Set Design led me to focus on the more enduring qualities of Fine Art. For the next several years I was successful as an abstract artist working mainly with acrylic on large canvasses where I could focus on abstract landscapes and paint pouring techniques.
It was during this period that I became inspired to begin working with metal. My love for exotic jewellery and my visions for my own jewellery designs started me on a whole new area of learning. With the help of a local Goldsmith and my own research, I began hand crafting precious jewellery.
After a decade of jewellery design, a new vision came to me, a way to combine my skill with metal with a new form of three dimensional collage art. This is when I began to make my assemblage series. After a lifetime of collecting interesting objects I was finally able to use them in my work to create mystical moments in time, frozen as if they were a single frame from a moving picture. These “Moments in Time” to me, are like Shamanic statuettes, possible places in possible times.
Now, after exploring all of these different mediums, I experience the most freedom being able to work in which ever medium inspires me at the time. My newest work is becoming a mix of all these mediums, assemblage work that combines painting with the metal and mixed media that hangs on the wall.
Thru my work I strive to create a sense that enlightens and inspires the viewer to imagine something fantastic and wonderful. I believe the purpose of Art is to lift the spirit and instil a positive experience.
