Out of Body      by Wendy Postma Aug./06

Five women sit, comfortable, in straight back chairs. A circle, loosely formed. The room is cheerful, brightly lit, and conversation is animated, easy tid bits of the day-to-day. Giggles, laughs, animated gasps at a juicy vulgarity.

Then silence. One woman has risen. It is time to begin.

The cards are passed deosil, and each woman in turn shuffles, lending her attention and energy to the deck.

Meg executes the draw and pulls Maat, Egyptian goddess of truth, order, balance and judgement.

Five women lie on the floor, some with their heads supported by soft pillows. The room is dim, silent and in that silence great work will be accomplished.

For twenty minutes we surrender to the silence and meditate on the significance of the aspect of the goddess Maat and what she may bring to us. How will she manifest her wisdom in our respective lives.

Depicted as a woman wearing a crown surmounted by a huge ostrich feather. Her foundation a stone platform.

I am aware of the room. The dimness, soft light. The muted breathing of the others.

But reality has shifted slightly. I am aware of that too.

The floor, cushioned by thick carpet and under pad hardens under my back. The room air refines and cools. An image behind my eyes moves forward and becomes 3-dimensional, hovering.

The bronze tone scales remain, suspended. Dominating my frontal vision. Only that and nothing more. I have come seeking answers and a question presents itself. This is so often the way.

What is the difference between justice and judgement. How thin is the line.

A bell sounds. Five women stir and stretch. We have returned. There is time for sharing.
